The Must-Read Guide to Relocating Without a Job

September 17, 2024

While having a job lined up before moving is common, things don't always work out that way. The good news is that moving without a job doesn't have to be overwhelming—it just requires more planning. Whether you're seeking new opportunities or simply a change of scenery, a little preparation can make all the difference. Here's a quick guide to help you confidently tackle the move and settle into your new life, even without a job waiting.

How to Make It Work

Proper preparation will make the transition smoother and set you up for success. Here are four questions that must be answered before making that leap.

1. How Are Your Finances?

Start by estimating your monthly expenses in the new location, including rent, utilities, insurance, food, and transportation. The plan should be to have savings that cover three to six months of living expenses, plus a cushion for unexpected costs like car repairs or medical bills.

2. How's the Job Market in the New Place?

Check out the job market at the new destination. Identify key employers and industries, especially those relevant to your field. Job sites and local newspapers can offer insights into available positions and average salaries. Remember, landing the perfect job might take time, so consider temporary positions in your field to keep the bills paid while searching for an ideal role.

3. How Does Your Resume Look?

Before making the move, refresh your resume by updating it with your most recent work experience, skills, and certifications. If you've already secured a new address, include that on the resume to appeal to local employers who prefer hiring nearby candidates.

4. Have You Gotten a Headstart for Job Applications?

Don't wait until you're done unpacking to start searching for jobs—applying before the move is best. In the weeks leading up to the relocation, send out resumes and cover letters, and clarify when you'll be available to start. When talking to potential employers, be upfront about the move and keep the explanation positive.

Navigating Life Without a Job After the Move

So, you've moved, updated your resume, and sent out applications. Now what? The next steps depend on where you are in your job search and your finances.

If money's tight, consider taking a part-time job or side hustle to keep the bills paid while continuing your search. Babysitting, tutoring, or working as a server might not be dream jobs, but they'll help you stay afloat—and you might even pick up new skills along the way.

Get out there, meet people, and explore new activities. Volunteering is a great way to connect with others while adding valuable experience to your resume. Be open to jobs outside your field, or consider moving in with friends or family if needed.

This could also be the perfect time to upskill—take courses, earn certifications, or explore a new career path. Who knows? You might discover a passion you never knew you had.
